The Olympic Museum

Eng. Ahmed El Demerdash Touny founded the Olympic Museum in 1960 inside Cairo International Stadium. In 1993, it was moved to the new building of the Egyptian Olympic Committee and was reopened in 1994.

The idea of the museum was based on presenting all the new and old sport collections of the participation in the Olympic, Regional and Continental Games including the official invitations, candidature files of hosting the Games, medals, awards, certificates, flags, posters, armors, badges, presents, photographs of the Olympic champions and photographs of the Egyptian and international sports personalities. The Egyptian Olympic Museum is one of the most important museums, not only in Egypt, but in the Middle East and Africa. The Museum is an important means of information concerning the history of the Olympic movement ( old & new ), the sport history of Egypt and how Egypt was the originator of the idea of holding the Regional and Continental Games (African, Arab and Mediterranean Games).

Mr. Juan Antonio Samaranch, former IOC President, visited Egypt on 17 - 21 May 1983. He wrote the following in the commemorative book of the Museum: "What I have seen today is an honor to all Egyptians … I haven't seen such a museum all my lifetime in the 109 countries which I visited all over the world. In fact, Touny's Olympic museum is extraordinary, beyond imagination and invaluable. It should be among the Egyptian monuments where VIPs should be invited to visit along with the pyramids area".

On 11 November 2007, Mr. Jacques Rogge, former IOC President, visited the Egyptian Olympic Museum. He wrote the following: " I record my sincere admiration of this marvelous museum that should be an example to all NOCs all over the world".
